Public Service Career Course Descriptions

Animal Health Care
The student will obtain the basic skills necessary to prepare for entry-level employment in the animal health care field. This course will provide training in the following areas: disease control, disease and laboratory testing, animal systems, animal health technology, general nutrition, animal housing and hygiene, clinical laboratory procedures, animal grooming, safety procedures and practices in handling of animals, and basic veterinary office procedures.
(1 semester course)

Banking/Financial Occupations
This program prepares students for employment in the financial industry. Through classroom instruction, students learn the basic operations of the banking/financial systems. Training will take place in various banks, savings and loans, credit unions, financial, and mortgage companies.
Prerequisite: Students must be 17 years old by the end of the term, and have keyboarding skills.

Child Care
This class combines classroom instruction with work-based training in various child care centers. The program focuses on discipline techniques; safety; curriculum; and growth and development of the infant, toddler, pre-school, and school age child. This course meets the requirement for employment as a provisional teacher under Title 22. Students successfully completing course meet the requirements as a provisional teacher under Title 22.

Cosmetology
This 1600-hour course leads to employment in a field that is growing faster than many. Combs, shears, razors, clippers, rollers, gels, mousse, blow dryers, and brushes are but a few of the “Tools of the Trade”. Recordkeeping, basic arithmetic, and public relations are also included. Students who complete this course are eligible to test for the State Cosmetology license. (Adults pay a registration fee, plus a kit fee)

Criminal Justice
This course introduces students to the various career areas and activities associated with the criminal justice system. Students will participate in an intense nine-week course that will cover the roles of the various agencies involved in the Criminal Justice system. Students will receive instruction on the different agencies including Police, Sheriff, FBI, Secret Service, private security, personal security, Treasury Department, Criminal Courts, District Attorney, incarceration procedures, and Military Police, etc.

Entertainment/Tourist Attraction Occupations
Students will be prepared for entry-level employment in the amusement park industry. This course combines classroom and site-based training. Students may train with an emphasis in game operations (arcades), food service, attractions (rides), or performance entertainment (theatre).

Fire Technology
Training takes place in the classroom and at a fire station. The course covers fire science, fire chemistry, fire prevention, equipment and systems, tactics and strategy, arson investigation, and first aid. Students who complete this course should contact their college counselor regarding advanced standing and/or challenging introductory Fire Technology courses offered at Mt. San Antonio College.

Food Service/Culinary
This course is designed to prepare students for a variety of jobs within the food service industry. Students will develop skills in food preparation and customer service. Training will include grill cooking, food preparation, salad bar set up, safety, and sanitation. Additional training will include sales and marketing.
