Health Career Course Descriptions
Dental Assistant and Registered Dental Assistant
This course is designed to prepare students for employment as a chair side dental assistant and prepare for license as a Registered Dental Assistant. This course includes instruction in dental terminology, communication, interpersonal skills, ethical and legal considerations, pre-clinical sciences, preventive dentistry, radiology, dental materials, and basic chair side assisting. Students participate in clinical internships.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
This one semester course combines classroom and lab instruction in all phases of pre-hospital emergency care. A minimum 24 hours of emergency room and 12 hours of ride along experience will be included. This course prepares students to become CPR/First Aid Certified and to be eligible to take the EMT-B certifying exam.
Prerequisite: must be in the 12th grade and 18 years of age by the end of the course.

Hospital Occupations (Acute Facility)
This course combines a core curriculum with workplace learning in various departments of a hospital or health care facility. Instruction includes hospital safety, asepsis, nutrition, assessment of vital signs, and job seeking skills. Prior to work experience students complete CPR certification. Sites are selected in business departments or patient support services for workplace learning.

Medical Assistant
Students learn the many skills of medical assisting, including ability to prepare patients for examination and treatment, and ability to perform various laboratory tests. This course completes with 140 hours of work-based learning in medical offices/clinics.

Medical Core
This course includes general workplace competencies and standard precautions within a health facility, as well as, medical terminology and CPR basics for general health professionals
Completion of this course may result in priority placement in certain health career courses offered by Baldy View ROP.
(9-week course)
Medical Front Office
This course prepares students for employment in the front office of a medical facility. Skills learned will include insurance, billing, receptionist duties and office equipment operation. The course completes with a 2-week on-site clinical experience.

Medical Math
This course will help students develop a variety of learner-based tools for success including: sequential skill building on basic arithmetic skills and ties the application of occupational skills with each math skill. This course also includes mnemonic devices to build memory and promote critical thinking skills.
Completion of this course may result in priority placement in certain health career courses offered by Baldy View ROP.

Nursing Assistant Certified & Acute
These courses combine classroom and clinical training and teach skills necessary for patient care in hospital or skilled nursing long-term care facilities. The CNA course prepares students to take the exam for the State Certified Nurse Assistant Certificate (CNA). Students must be fingerprinted as required by the Department of Health Services.

Pharmacy Clerk
This course prepares students for employment in a retail, clinical, or hospital pharmacy. The student will learn how to do the following: interpret prescriptions, type prescription labels, enter orders into a computer or patient profile, insurance billing, cashier, and customer service.

Pharmacy Technician
This course equips students with entry level skills for employment in retail pharmacies through classroom instruction and training in community pharmacies. Advanced coursework will prepare students for employment in clinical or hospital pharmacies. Students prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. Prerequisites include: a negative TB clearance, a current immunization record, and the ability to periodically lift 35 pounds. Computer operation knowledge is helpful. A drug test will be required prior to clinical placement.

Sports Medicine
The student will study anatomy/physiology, preventative health techniques, and skills for employment in physical therapy and athletic trainer aide roles. Work based learning takes place in local physical therapy departments.
